Imtiaz T. Kamal

She is a specialist in various aspects of education and training of midlevel health care providers ( particularly maternity care providers), a public health scientist, writer and poet. Got basic professional education from UK and post graduate education from Columbia University , USA. Served the Govt. of Pakistan, Pakistan Nurses Association and Family Planning Association of Pakistan for 17 years before joining EMRO/WHO in 1972. Worked in Iraq and Yemen till 1977. Joined IPPF staff in 1977 as Regional Director Programmes for MINA Region ( 14 countries)

Invited back by WHO as Regional Advisor Nursing, EMRO ( 23 countries). Returned to Pakistan in 1985. Established Pathfinder International’s Country Office and headed it for 9 years before it moved to Islamabad.

Currently working as Secretary General of the National Committee for Maternal and Neonatal Health. After 50 years of efforts (and opposition) established Midwifery Association of Pakistan in 2005. Also founded South Asian Midwives Alliance ( SAMA) in collaboration with Afghanistan and India.

Is recipient of many Honours and Awards from national and international organizations. The latest ones are: Fatima Jinnah Medal awarded by the Government of Pakistan in 2005; Life Time Achievement Award for Services to Midwifery and to Women” given jointly by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and International Confederation of Midwives in 2010; Selected by Women Deliver in 2011, as “One of the 100 Inspirational Personalities of the World”.
